The number of “cheaters” trying to take advantage of the organic label has drawn the attention of Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue.
“We want to jealously guard the legitimate, and I think there’s some legitimate concern regarding cheaters coming into the country with organic labels that aren’t following organic processes.”
USDA authorizes certifying agencies or people to verify that labels that say organic are produced using approved organic practices.
Perdue said there could be room for improvements.
“Our goal is to have better education of these authorizing certifiers and to maybe do some auditing, not only of the certifiers but on the ground as well.”
USDA recently sent out a warning of eight fraudulent organic certificates.
